Located near Estes Park, Colorado, Rocky Mountain National Park is the fourth most visited park in the country and is known for its striking mountain scenery, bucket list hikes, and beautiful alpine lakes.

It’s also home to the iconic Trail Ridge Road and the area’s tallest peak, Long’s Peak.

As you explore the park’s 200,000+ acres, be sure to enjoy all of the best things to do in Rocky Mountain National Park. Local highlights include hiking to Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, and Nymph Lake.

However, because this is probably one of the most popular hikes in the park, you’ll want to arrive well before dawn to enjoy sweeping views of Hallet Peak and Dragon’s Tail Couloir.

Afterward, hike to Sky Pond and Bear Lake before enjoying a scenic drive along Trail Ridge Road, which stretches over 48 miles and takes you from Grand Lake to Estes Park.

It’s also a must-see since it’s the highest paved road in the nation and is home to the highest visitor’s center, too.

Best time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park: Visit the park any time between late June and October since this is when pretty much all of the trails and roads in the park will be open.

6. The Pacific Coast Highway, California for an Iconic Drive

Called “PCH” by locals, this iconic highway offers hundreds of miles of untouched coast, rugged terrain, and soothing curves as you glide along this scenic coastline.

On a San Francisco to San Diego road trip, you’ll explore iconic sights that include rushing waterfalls, groves of coastal redwood trees, and gorgeous beaches in Big Sur, California.

At this marine sanctuary, catch a glimpse of seals, sea otters, and migrating gray whales from the shore at the Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.

See the purple sand at Pfeiffer Beach in the heart of the undeveloped coast.

Enjoy the boardwalk and carnival rides at the Santa Monica Pier along the Pacific Coast Highway in Southern California.

PCH is best experienced when driven in a north to south direction to take advantage of the views closest to the water. In fact, many people start in San Francisco.

A trip like this could be done in a day or two, but you’ll discover the real Pacific Coast Highway if you can take a week (or more) to soak in the beauty of this world-famous drive in the USA.

The best time to explore the Pacific Coast Highway: September and October are ideal, when the marine fog is at its lowest.

But even in these months the fog will come and go as you pass through each region of the Pacific Coast Highway.

Be aware that early summer months can be completely socked in so you could miss the epic coastal views.

Where to stay along the Pacific Coast Highway: Where you stay depends on how long your road trip is but a few of the best spots for stops include San Francisco, Monterey, Big Sur or Carmel, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, LA, and San Diego.

7. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming for Geysers & Widlfie

Yellowstone National Park is one of the biggest national parks in the US and one of Earth’s largest volcanoes…and you can see this volcanic activity in many places in the park.

Yellowstone has something for everyone, including its most famous attraction: Old Faithful in the Upper Geyser Basin.

Make sure to visit Grand Prismatic Spring which is in the Midway Geyser Basin.

The center of the spring can appear bright blue with yellow and rust colors around it, due to the bacteria.

Close to the North Entrance, you’ll find Mammoth Hot Springs, with its white terraces created by the calcium carbonate deposited from the hot water springs in this area.

There are many hiking trails in Yellowstone. Choose your own adventure with waterfalls and mountains here. Wildlife is prominent with herds of bison, grizzly and black bears, wolves, moose, and sheep.

If you’re driving, your Yellowstone packing list should include bear spray! If you’re flying, it’s illegal to carry on the plane so just rent bear spray in the park instead.

The best time to visit Yellowstone National Park: The end of June to late September is ideal as the whole park is open throughout these dates.

Outside of this time most of the park can be closed due to snow, with only a small area open to the public.

Where to stay in Yellowstone National Park: It’s a big place! Choosing your base depends upon which of the five entrances you’ll be visiting from.

If you want a central location inside the park (less scenic with more people but very convenient) stay at Canyon Lodge and Cabins in Canyon Village.

Otherwise, head over to my recommended cabin rentals near Yellowstone here.

8. Charleston, South Carolina for Antebellum Architecture

With a storied history, fine antebellum architecture, and a happening food scene, historic Charleston has a lot to offer to every traveler.

Stroll through Charleston’s French Quarter, a charming neighborhood filled with beautiful churches and historic landmarks.

To avoid crowds, yet still experience Zion in all its glory, visit in late spring after the snow melts, early summer during the month of May, or in fall before temperatures begin to get cold.

Otherwise, Springdale—located right at the park entrance—makes a convenient and cost-effective base.

The historic Rose Cottage with two bedrooms is a great choice. This quaint and cozy space sleeps four.

Check price and availability at Rose Cottage here.

Best times to visit Grand Teton National Park: Summer is a great time to visit, when the temperatures are the nicest.

However, one of the best times to visit is in late September to mid-October when the leaves are starting to change, and the moose and elk are in rut.

This is when they will be most active, but also more aggressive, so as always, respect wildlife and keep a safe distance.

Along this route, you’ll find Paul Revere’s House, the Old State House (where the Declaration of Independence was read out for the first time in 1776) and the Bunker Hill Monument, which is at the site of one of the most important battles in the Revolutionary War.

The most popular activity to enjoy here is driving and exploring the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Along this road, you’ll have plenty of hiking opportunities, scenic vistas to ogle, and historic lodges of the park to explore.

If you decide to go the route of the Going-to-the-Sun Road that crosses the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, be sure to book one of the famous Red Bus tours.

A park ranger drives you so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the views without having to worry about the hairpin turns. You’ll want to enjoy the views anyway!

Another spot not to miss is Lake McDonald and Lake McDonald Lodge. You’ll want to stop here for lunch, the views, and to enjoy a scenic boat tour around Lake McDonald.

Because of the popularity of Glacier National Park and due to the short season the Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open, planning a visit can be tricky depending on what you want to do.

However, you still have opportunities to do this from September through early October, which is considered shoulder season and much less crowded.
